I have been going through boxes full of miscellanous genealogy. Today I found a Priority envelope full. It was dated 2004. I am going to share some of the info here just hoping someone will see the information and maybe can help me out with this side of my family.

I have a letter from Mrs. Patrick E. Lilly, Athens, GA  dated November 9, 1978.  The letter was addressed to A Dr. Mike Lilly, Irondale, AL  I have googled the address to see if anyone by that name is still living. So far no information.

November 8, 1878

Dear Dr. Lilly,

I enjoyed talking to you and I hope you have been able to find the dates of birth and death of Edward Lilly (Edward is my Gr Gr Gr Grandfather. I have his birth and death date) as he came here from Ireland, perhaps their County records would have his date of birth. My husband, Patrick Lilly, told me his Great Grandfather was from County Cork and had been apprenticed as a stone mason. He came to America to join the gold rush, arriving in Miami, then traveled by horseback north to Athens and stopped for a drink of water at a well where a young lady was drawing a bucket of water.He delayed long enough to marry and was off to the gold fields. He stayed for a couple of years and had found gold of which he was robbed on his return trip. A boy had been born during his absence. He stayed in Athens for a short while and returned to California for two or three yeas. He again found gold and returned to Athens to buy a farm that was located in the place now known as Five-Points.

Enclosed is a picture of Robert and Virginia Lilly, my husbands grandparents, and a copy of Robert Obituary notice from the Athens newspaper. I went to the First Christian Church where Robert and other Lilly’s had been members thinking a record might include Robert’s parents, but their records were practically remembered for his very Irish brogue.

I hope this small amount of information will be of some assistance.

I am always on the lookout for Larry Epps born 1782 in NC and died June 1861 Lincoln County Tennessee

He married Elizabeth Creighton/Craton born 1785 in VA.  She is presumed to have died in LCT also.

Larry and Elizabeth married 1807 in Wilson County TN.

After a bazillion years of researching I finally found my Great Great Grandparents on my fathers side. Thomas Cowan and Catherine McKelvey Cowan of Pennsylvania.

I found another article with them in the article.

It listed him as Thomas Cohen and Catharine McKelsey of Upland, Delaware Co, PA.    It came from North America, Family Histories, 1600-2000   Hannun Family, The Genealogy of Hannum Family descended from John and Margery Hannum Settlers of Chester PA.  North American, Family Histories 1500-2000 page 464.

Karen Epps Harris

Visitation for Mrs. Karen Epps Harris (formerly Burgher) will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, August 18, 2015 at Disciple Hall at First United Methodist Church of Jackson. A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

Mrs. Harris died Friday, August 14, 2015 at her home.

She was born in Gadsden, AL, the daughter of the late William Epps and the late Retha Fitzpatrick Epps. She was married to Dr. David Harris on March 7, 1998. Mrs. Harris was a registered nurse at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital and attended First United Methodist Church. She played Bunco each month with very best friends beginning approximately thirty years ago.

Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, David Epps.

Surviving are her husband, Dr. David Harris of Jackson; her step-son, Craig Harris of Cincinnati, OH; her step-daughter, Carley Harris of Portsmouth, OH; her brother, Thomas Epps of Atlanta, GA; her sister, Chris Wheeler of Locust Fork, Alabama; her aunt, Janice Myers of Locust Fork, AL; her nieces, Sarah Powell and Leanna Jones both of Florida and her nephew, William Epps of Atlanta, GA.

Karen Epps Harris  August 23, 1956- August 14, 2015

Right now I am aggravated , angry, sad and as we say in the South ” mad as two wet hens.”

This year marks my twentieth eighth year of genealogy. I LOVE GENEALOGY, I love the hunt, I love visiting cemeteries and admiring the tombstones from hundreds of years ago. I like think about the people that are in the ground, are they in wooden coffins or are they in a fancy coffin, what type of life they had,  were they rich were they poor. If it was a woman she possibly had children and grandchildren did she wear an apron, cook apple pies, wash her clothes on a rub board and then hang out on the lines to dry?  Was she a skinny woman or one of those fat fluffy women that we all loved to crawl up in those kind of grannies lap and smell the scent of powder that she perfumed herself with while she hugged us and gave us a million kisses.   Was PawPaw a farmer, or did he work at the bank, wear overalls, chew tobacco or dress up in a suit, tie and hat?  You get the idea, if you have ever visited one while you were researching you know exactly what I am talking about.  Today I visited one in Northeast AL, Piedmont, AL to be exact and I am very sad for a lot of reasons. You see this one was damaged and it is very old.

Some of the early settlers of the area are buried here. I saw a lot of beer bottles , broken tombstones, turned over tombstones, potato chip bags , soda bottles and golf balls.Time did not break these tombstones. SOME TRASH OF A CRIMINAL DID THIS. Who does this kind of activity? Who is so much of a low of a life and bored that they feel they have to go in a cemetery to cause destruction? CRIMINALS, TRASH, SCUM OF THE EARTH.

I want you to look at these pictures at what some heathen did.  Why would ANYONE want to desecrate a cemetery?  It broke my heart. Can it be corrected? Can someone help restore this old cemetery back to what it should be or does no one really care anymore?

What really should happen here is some company donate a fence, enclose the property and the citizens whether it be a Girl Scout/Boy Scout or some church organization should go here and clean this place up. Someone should volunteer to keep it cleaned up. This is families, people that used to walk the earth.  I’d even suggest the city let the jail workers go up there and clean it up.  I tried to stand up as many tombstones as I could and it truly was sad and I am very angry that people would do this and then no one will correct it. My husband Gary said “you have been in 1000’s of cemeteries all over the USA and this one by far has been the worst one.”

One day it will be “Oh I think there used to be a cemetery there.” Reason being, it will either be overrun with weeds, bushes and someone will have totally destroyed the place.

I lived my early life in this area until I graduated a long time ago. I was shocked and saddened that this type of thing happened. NEVER would anyone of my era even think of this. I am coming back soon with some chalk going to the place, documenting every stone that is there for future generations of researchers. I hope to see it in better shape .

Thomas Cohen born 1832 or 1828 I have conflicting info in Ireland,  He however died August 6, 1891 in Pennsylvania . He is buried at Calvary Episcopal Cemetery, Aston Mills, Delaware County, PA

I have a wife for Thomas, Catherine born September 12, 1841 in Ireland.. She died February 20, 1916 in Pennsylvania age 75.  I have her father as John Kelvey and her mother Mary Armstrong both born in Ireland. I am wondering if McKelvey. She is buried at Calvary Episcopal Cemetery, Aston Mills, Delaware County, PA

Frederick Alfred born 1878  he ended up in Detroit Michigan where some years later he died.
